Thermal break windows have become an essential part of modern construction and energy-efficient renovation projects. They reduce heat loss, improve interior comfort and cut energy bills. But do these high thermal performances go hand in hand with a high level of safety? Does this type of window really protect against intruders?

What is a thermal break?

A thermal bridge is an area where heat escapes more easily, particularly at junctions between materials (for example, between the aluminum frame and the glazing). In a window, this mainly concerns :

  • the frame profile,
  • fixing zones between frame and sash,
  • and sometimes hinges or handles.

Thermal bridge break (TBB) involves inserting an insulating barrier (often made of polyamide) between the inside and outside of the frame. This interrupts thermal conduction between the heated interior and the cold exterior, and considerably improves the energy performance of the window, particularly in aluminum.

Thermal advantages… and their safety limits

RPT windows offer real benefits:

  • reduced condensation,
  • improved comfort in both winter and summer,
  • best energy label for the home,
  • long-term heating savings.

However, good thermal insulation does not automatically guarantee burglar-proof protection. Some highly energy-efficient windows may remain vulnerable if :

  • the glazing is not secured,
  • the locking system is standard,
  • the hinges are accessible and unprotected,
  • or the frame is made of low-grade PVC, which is easy to deform.

It is therefore essential to check safety features as well as thermal performance.

How to reconcile thermal break and enhanced safety?

1. Choosing safety glazing

A high-performance window must incorporate laminated glazing complying with EN 356, with a P2A to P5A class depending on the exposure of the dwelling. Double-glazing with at least one laminated side provides :

  • to slow down the break-in,
  • to retain splinters in the event of impact,
  • and add a layer of soundproofing.

This is an ideal combination for windows on the first floor or close to access points.

2. Choose reinforced joinery

RPT windows are available in :

  • aluminium with internal reinforcements, highly resistant to deformation,
  • Reinforced PVC, lighter but strong if well designed,
  • or wood-aluminum, combining strength, aesthetics and thermal performance.

Make sure that the profiles comply with mechanical resistance standards, and that they include reinforcements in the fastening areas.

3. Secure locking system

Good glazing and joinery aren’t enough if the window closes with a simple latch. You need :

  • multi-point locking,
  • invisible or protected hinges,
  • handles with keys, especially on large or easily accessible windows.

These elements are often overlooked, but they represent a crucial line of defense against intrusions.

4. Burglar-proof certification

Some RPT windows are certified RC1 to RC3 (EN 1627 standard):

  • RC1: minimum resistance (deterrent),
  • RC2: resistance to break-in with simple tools for 3 minutes,
  • RC3: resistance to a more sustained attempt (up to 5 minutes).

If safety is a priority, choosing a model with RC2 certification or higher is highly recommended.
