Why are roof windows at risk?
Contrary to popular belief, a high window does not automatically guarantee safety:
- Some roofs can be accessed from a balcony, lean-to, party wall or gutter.
- If you’re away for a long time, a burglar may take the time to sneak up and test the opening.
- Many roof window models are old, with simple or worn opening systems that are easy to force.
The good news is that there are many ways to effectively secure a roof window, from glazing and hardware to opening detection.
1. Opt for safety glazing
The first line of defence is the glazing itself. Many older roof windows are still fitted with standard single- or double-glazed units, which offer little resistance to burglary.

2. Reinforce the locking system
Some roof windows can be prised open, especially if the locking system is centralized or accessible without tools.
To remedy this :
- install a specific security lock or bolt for roof windows,
- choose a key-lockable handle, especially if the room is seldom used,
- on models with rotation or projection, ensure that the locking point is solid and reinforced.
Some brands offer safety kits compatible with their older models, to be integrated directly into the existing frame.
3. Add an opening or shock sensor
Passive protection is useful, but it can be supplemented by a detection device:
- opening sensor, connected to an alarm system,
- shock or vibration detector, which alerts you as soon as an abnormal shock is detected on the glazing,
- or integration into a home automation system, which sends an alert to your smartphone.
It’s a simple solution to implement, even without replacing the window, and particularly useful during long absences.
4. Install deterrent external protection
In some cases, it may be useful to add :
- a secure external blind, which prevents opening from the outside,
- a discreet grille inside, especially in unused outbuildings or attics,
- a surveillance camera aimed at the roof, to deter and record any attempts.
These devices do not replace secure glazing, but are an effective complement to a deterrent strategy.
