Why test the conformity of an electrical installation?
Checking the conformity of your electrical installation is essential to ensure the safety of occupants and avoid any risk of electrocution or fire. In Belgium, the Règlement Général sur les Installations Électriques (RGIE) imposes strict standards to guarantee a safe installation. To test an installation, specific tools are required to measure earthing, check circuits and detect any anomalies.
1. The multimeter
The multimeter is an indispensable tool for checking the presence of voltage in circuits and measuring various electrical parameters:
- Voltage (volts – V) : Ensures correct power supply.
- Current (amps – A): Checks whether a circuit is overloaded.
- Resistance (ohms – Ω): Can help identify faulty cables.
2. Electrical socket tester
A socket tester allows you to quickly check whether a socket is correctly wired and working properly. It detects :
- The absence of land
- Phase/neutral inversion
- Incorrect voltage
Some advanced models can also test differential circuit breakers.
3. The earthing tester
Earthing is essential to drain leakage currents and protect against electrocution. To test it, we use an earth tester, which measures the resistance of the earth connection. The standard requires a resistance of less than 30 ohms for compliance.
4. The insulation tester
A megohmmeter or insulation tester can be used to check whether the insulation of electrical cables is still effective. It is particularly useful for detecting current leaks that could cause a short-circuit or electrocution.
5. Electrical installation controller
This professional tool, used by electricians and approved inspection bodies (Vinçotte, BTV, OCB, SGS…), enables a complete test of the electrical installation by measuring :
- Tripping circuit breakers and differential switches
- Electrical circuit continuity
- Grounding resistance values
6. The non-contact voltage detector
This small device detects the presence of current without touching the wires, which is particularly useful for checking that a circuit is de-energized before any work is carried out.
