Why modernize an electrical system?
An old electrical installation can be dangerous, and no longer complies with the current standards of Belgium’s Règlement Général sur les Installations Électriques (RGIE). The risks of electrocution, short-circuit and fire increase with the ageing of cables and the absence of modern protection systems. Modernizing your installation will ensure the safety of occupants, optimize energy consumption and comply with legal requirements, particularly in the event of the property being sold.
Electrical diagnosis
Before starting any work, it’s essential to carry out a complete diagnosis to identify the elements to be replaced or improved. A qualified electrician can check :
- Condition of electrical panel
- Presence and effectiveness of earthing system
- Cable cross-section and insulation
- Number and condition of sockets and switches
- Protection against overvoltage and current leakage
Replacing the electrical panel
The electrical panel is a key element of the installation. A modern model should include :
- A main circuit breaker to cut off the electricity in case of a problem
- Divisional circuit breakers for each circuit (sockets, lighting, household appliances, etc.)
- Differential switches (30mA) to detect current leaks
- A lightning arrester to protect equipment in the event of a power surge
An obsolete switchboard with porcelain fuses needs to be replaced to guarantee the safety of the installation.
Check and improve earthing
Proper grounding is essential to dissipate leakage currents and protect against electrocution. Modernizing an electrical installation often involves :
- Installing or checking a ground spike
- Replacement or installation of a properly sized earth conductor
- Correct grounding of all circuits
Replace obsolete wiring
Older electrical cables may be undersized or poorly insulated, increasing the risk of fire. Modernization involves :
- Replacing non-compliant wires
- Installation of cables with suitable cross-sections (1.5 mm² for lighting, 2.5 mm² for sockets, 6 mm² or more for powerful circuits).
- Adding protective sheaths to insulate cables properly
Add compliant sockets and switches
Older electrical installations often have too few sockets, leading to the use of dangerous power strips. We recommend :
- Install more wall outlets in every room
- Check that all sockets are earthed
- Use switches with modern protection
Integrating modern equipment
Take advantage of modernization to integrate more efficient equipment:
- Home automation systems for remote control of lighting and sockets
- Integrated USB sockets for added convenience
- Low-energy LED lighting to optimize energy consumption
Have the installation inspected and obtain a certificate of conformity
Once modernization is complete, an approved body (Vinçotte, BTV, OCB, SGS…) must carry out an electrical inspection to ensure that the installation complies with standards. Following this inspection, a certificate of electrical compliance is issued, proving that the installation is safe and complies with current regulations.
