Why install a wall socket?
Adding a wall socket improves the comfort and convenience of your electrical installation. Whether you’re plugging in a new appliance, optimizing the layout of a room or replacing a faulty socket, a well-planned installation guarantees safety and compliance with electrical standards.
Step 1: Prepare the necessary materials
Before you start, make sure you have the right equipment:
- A wall socket adapted to your installation (earthed or ungrounded)
- Flat and Phillips screwdrivers
- Stripping pliers
- A voltage tester
- A flush-mounting box (if required)
- Bubble level for perfect alignment
Step 2: Switch off the power supply
Safety is paramount. Before starting any work, switch off the power at the electrical panel. Use a voltage tester on the wires to check that there is no current before continuing with the installation.
Step 3: Prepare the cables
If you’re installing an outlet on a new wall, pull the necessary cables from the electrical panel. For a replacement, remove the old socket by unscrewing its support and freeing the wires. Strip about 1 cm of the wires using wire strippers.
Step 4: Connect the wires
Wall sockets generally have three terminals:
- Phase (L, red or brown): connect to the corresponding terminal.
- Neutral (N, blue): connect to terminal marked “N”.
- Earth (yellow/green): essential for earthed installations, connect to earth terminal.
Insert each wire into its slot and tighten the screws firmly to ensure good contact.
Step 5: Wall-mount the socket
Place the socket in the flush-mounting box or on the wall and screw it down securely. Check alignment with a spirit level. Replace the socket cover for a clean, attractive finish.
Step 6: Test the installation
Restore power and test the plug with a voltage tester. Check that everything is working properly before you consider the installation complete.
