How to install a dedicated circuit for an appliance

Why install a dedicated circuit?

Some appliances, such as ovens, hobs, washing machines or water heaters, consume large amounts of energy. To avoid overloads and ensure a stable power supply, we recommend installing a dedicated circuit. This guarantees the safety of your electrical network and extends the life of your equipment.

Step 1: Check the unit’s power rating

Before installing a dedicated circuit, identify the electrical requirements of the appliance concerned. Check its wattage and recommended amperage, usually indicated on the manufacturer’s label. A powerful appliance will require a circuit with a suitable wiring cross-section and circuit breaker.

Step 2: Choosing the right equipment

For a safe, standard-compliant circuit, you’ll need :

  • A dedicated circuit breaker (16A for a washing machine, 32A for a hob…)
  • A suitable electrical cable (2.5 mm² for 16A, 6 mm² for 32A)
  • A reinforced wall socket or direct connection, depending on the device
  • A sheath to protect cabling

Step 3: Switch off the power supply

Before starting any work, switch off the power at the electrical panel and use a voltage tester to check that no current is flowing.

Step 4: Install wiring and circuit breaker

  • Run the electrical cable through a protective sheath to the electrical panel.
  • Install a suitable circuit breaker in the panel and connect it to the main power supply.
  • Connect the dedicated circuit wires to the circuit breaker:
    • Phase (red or brown) on circuit breaker terminal
    • Neutral (blue) on panel neutral terminal block
    • Earth (yellow/green) on grounding strip

Step 5: Connect the device

If the appliance works with a plug, install a reinforced wall socket, respecting the cable cross-section. For a direct connection (such as a cooktop), connect the wires according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Step 6: Test the installation

Restore power and test operation. Check that the circuit breaker has not tripped and that the unit is operating normally.
