Why is some glazing vulnerable?

Many homes are still equipped with :

  • simple, unsecured glass, easy to break,
  • standard unprotected double-glazing, not resistant to impact or intrusion attempts,
  • non-laminated glass, whose splinters are sharp and dangerous,
  • or poorly installed glazing, with gaps in the frame or damaged seals.

Over time, exposure to sunlight, humidity and vibration can also weaken the glazing structure, particularly around fixing points or on older woodwork.

Visible signs of weak glazing

Certain clues should alert you visually:

  • Scratches, micro-cracks or bubbles in the glass: these indicate wear and tear, ageing of the material or past impact.
  • No marking or label: laminated or tempered glass is often stamped (EN 356 or EN 12150). If your glass is not marked, it is probably conventional.
  • Sharp splinters visible on a broken corner or impact: unsecured glass shatters into sharp fragments, unlike laminated glass which remains bonded.
  • Play in the frame or poorly maintained glazing: a pane that moves slightly in its frame is poorly installed and therefore more vulnerable.
  • Dry or cracked gasket: a deteriorated gasket allows air and moisture to pass through, but can also mean that the glass is no longer properly secured.

Check glazing type

If no markings are present, you can perform a few simple tests (without doing them yourself in case of doubt or danger):

1. Reflection test

Hold a flame or luminous object (lighter, lamp) close to the glass:

  • on double-glazing, you’ll see four light reflections (two per pane),
  • on a single-glazed unit, only two,
  • if one of the reflections is slightly colored, this often indicates a specific treatment, such as low-emissivity glazing or laminated glass.

2. Shock resistance (not to be done alone)

A professional can perform a percussion resistance test using a specialized tool or ball impactor. This test can be used to assess :

  • if the glass cracks easily,
  • if she gives in completely on the first attempt,
  • or if it maintains its structure after impact.

This test is safe when performed in a secure environment, but should never be attempted without suitable equipment.

3. Glazing thickness

Weak glazing is often very thin (4 mm or less). Laminated safety glass or insulating glass is generally thicker. Measuring with a caliper or laser (for professionals) can give a first indication.

Where should they be checked first?

Certain areas of the house are more exposed and deserve special attention:

  • French windows, often accessible from the outside,
  • bay windows and verandas, with little protection,
  • first floor windows, street or garden side,
  • bathroom or WC windows, sometimes poorly secured but opening onto the outside,
  • entrance doors with glass transom or oculus, very sensitive if glazed with conventional glass.

What to do when in doubt

If you identify weak glass, you have several options:

  • reinforcement with safety film, for quick interior installation,
  • replacement by laminated glazing complying with EN 356,
  • installation of double-glazed safety glass for insulation and protection,
  • or installation of glass breakage sensors, to be alerted in the event of an attempt.
