Ozone (O₃) is an unstable gas generated under certain conditions, including:

- When an electrical component heats up or burns
- In the event of slow electrical discharge due to loose connections or damaged insulation
In the home, an ozone smell is rarely harmless. It is often the sign of abnormal heating or a latent short-circuit. It may even precede the start of an electrical fire, making it a warning signal to be taken very seriously.
What are the possible causes in a domestic installation?
- An overheated electrical panel: a loose circuit-breaker or cable can cause ozone-generating arcs.
