Why check the conformity of your electrical installation?

A compliant electrical installation guarantees the safety of occupants and the correct operation of equipment. In Belgium, the General Regulations on Electrical Installations (RGIE) impose strict standards to avoid the risks of electrocution, fire and electrical malfunctions. If your installation is old, or if you’re planning work, it’s essential to check that it complies with standards.

1. Check condition of electrical panel

The electrical panel is the heart of your installation. A compliant panel must include :

• A general circuit breaker to cut off the power supply in the event of a problem.
• Individual circuit breakers to protect each circuit (sockets, lighting, appliances, etc.).
• Differential switches to detect current leaks and prevent electrocution.
• Clear labeling for easy identification of each circuit.

An outdated switchboard with porcelain fuses or unidentified equipment is a sign that your installation needs updating.

2. Check earthing

Earthing is essential to drain leakage currents and protect occupants from electric shock. To test its effectiveness, a professional can measure its resistance using a specialized device. If the earthing system is missing or defective, it must be brought up to standard.

3. Check sockets and switches

Sockets and switches must be in good condition and properly secured. A compliant installation complies with the following rules:

• Earthing sockets are mandatory in main rooms.
• Sockets and switches in bathrooms and kitchens must be protected against moisture.
• Wires must not be visible or damaged.

If your sockets are old, ungrounded or show signs of overheating, we recommend that you bring them up to standard.

4. Check circuit protection

Each circuit must be protected by a circuit breaker suited to the power rating of the connected appliances. Specialized circuits, such as those for cookers or washing machines, require specific wiring and reinforced protection. Overloading or undersized wiring can cause dangerous overheating.

5. Call in a professional for an electrical diagnosis

A qualified electrician can carry out a complete inspection and tell you whether your installation complies with the RGIE. When selling a property, a certificate of electrical compliance is mandatory, and must be issued by an approved body after inspection.
