Electric shock: what are the real risks?

Even if the shock seems benign (tingling, vibration or a temporary burning sensation), it’s a symptom of an electrical problem. Among the most common causes :

  • Current leakage to earth, incorrectly detected or unprotected
  • A faulty socket or switch
  • A poorly insulated household appliance
  • Absent or faulty grounding
  • Moisture in the electrical installation

In any case, it’s never normal. A single shock can be enough to cause cardiac arrest, especially in children, the elderly or those with high body humidity.

What to do immediately after an electric shock

  1. Assess the person’s condition
    Even if the person is feeling well, it is advisable to consult a doctor, especially in the event of prolonged sensation, muscle pain, burning or loss of consciousness (even if brief).
  2. Identify the source of the shock
    Identify the location or equipment involved: plugged-in appliance, wall socket, light fixture, switch, hot water tank, etc.
  3. Switch off the power supply to the circuit concerned
    Switch off the corresponding circuit breaker, or even the general power supply if you have any doubts about the origin. Do not touch any suspect element.
  4. Avoid use until fully inspected
    Leave the installation de-energized or avoid using the area until a professional has inspected it.

Post-incident checks

  • Check earthing: an ungrounded or poorly connected installation cannot divert leakage current, which can cause a shock.
  • Test differential circuit breakers: if the differential did not trip at the moment of impact, it is probably missing, incorrectly calibrated or defective.
  • Inspect the outlet or equipment in question for burns, damaged cables, abnormal heat, etc.
  • Leakage current measurement: a professional can use a measuring device to detect any invisible leaks in your network.

When should you call an emergency electrician?

An electric shock is a warning signal. Even if it leaves no visible trace, it indicates a potentially serious fault. It is strongly recommended to contact an electrician urgently if :

  • You have received a shock from a new or frequently used device
  • Earth leakage circuit breaker does not react
  • You suspect a current leak or earth fault
