Why are documents required for compliance?
In Belgium, all electrical installations must comply with the Règlement Général sur les Installations Électriques (RGIE). Several documents are required to prove that the installation complies with current safety standards. These documents are essential to obtain a certificate of electrical conformity, which is mandatory when selling property or connecting to the grid.
1. Single-line diagram of the installation
The single-line diagram is a detailed plan of the electrical installation. It shows :
- The various electrical circuits and their connection to the switchboard
- Installed circuit breakers and differential switches
- Sockets, switches and light points on each circuit
This diagram is essential to enable inspection bodies to assess the installation’s conformity.
2. Position diagram
The position diagram completes the single-line diagram by showing the physical location of sockets, switches, lights and the electrical panel in the building. It helps check that the installation complies with safety distances and current standards.
3. Grounding certificate
An earthing test is compulsory to prove that the installation correctly evacuates leakage currents and protects occupants against the risk of electrocution. This test is carried out by a qualified electrician, and the results must be recorded in a report.
4. Inspection report from an approved body
Once the compliance work has been completed, an approved organization (Vinçotte, BTV, OCB, SGS…) must carry out an inspection of the electrical installation. This inspection verifies :
- Presence of protective devices (circuit breakers, differential switches, lightning arresters, etc.)
- Compliance of electrical circuits and wiring
- Compliance with safety standards, especially for damp rooms
If the installation complies, the organization issues a certificate of electrical conformity, valid for 25 years for a residential dwelling.
5. Non-conformity report (if required)
If the system does not comply with standards, a non-conformity report is issued with a list of corrections to be made. The owner then has a period of time in which to carry out the work before a new inspection.
