The special features of high-temperature heat pumps for radiators

High-temperature heat pumps (AHPs) are an ideal solution for homes already equipped with conventional radiators, which require high-temperature water to operate efficiently. Unlike standard models, high-temperature heat pumps are designed to produce hot water at higher temperatures, suitable for these heating systems. Here’s an overview of the special features of these heat pumps and what they can do for your system.

How a high-temperature heat pump works

A high-temperature heat pump operates on the same principle as a conventional heat pump, extracting heat from the outside air and transferring it to the heating water. However, it is specifically designed to produce water at temperatures ranging from 55°C to 65°C, compared with around 35°C to 45°C for standard models. This type of heat pump is particularly well suited to older homes with radiators, which cannot run on low-temperature water, unlike underfloor heating systems.

Advantages of high-temperature heat pumps

1. Adaptability to existing installations

One of the main advantages of high-temperature heat pumps is their compatibility with conventional radiators. If your home has central heating with radiators, it can be difficult to switch to a traditional heat pump, which requires low-temperature radiators. A high-temperature heat pump solves this problem by supplying water at the right temperature to ensure comfortable heat, without having to replace the radiators.

2. Long-term energy savings

Although the purchase cost of a high-temperature heat pump is often higher than that of a standard unit, it can generate significant energy savings over the long term. By reducing dependence on fossil fuels, it saves on heating bills, while offering an environmentally-friendly solution by reducing the carbon footprint.

3. High performance in cold climates

High-temperature heat pumps are particularly efficient in cold regions. They can operate efficiently even at low winter temperatures, making them ideal for geographical areas with harsh winters. What’s more, they retain their ability to provide heat even at outdoor temperatures close to 0°C.

4. Domestic hot water production

Some high-temperature heat pumps are also equipped to supply domestic hot water (DHW). This makes it possible to have a heating and hot water system in a single unit, simplifying installation and maintenance.

Disadvantages and limitations

1. High initial cost

High-temperature heat pumps are generally more expensive to purchase than standard models. They also require more extensive installation work, especially if your heating system needs to be adapted or reinforced to withstand high temperatures.

2. Less efficient at very low temperatures

Although these heat pumps are designed for higher temperatures, they remain less efficient than low-temperature models when outside temperatures are very low. Their efficiency can be affected in extreme climatic conditions, which may require additional heating.
