It distributes electricity and protects your home against the risks of electrocution and fire. In Belgium, it must comply with the Règlement Général sur les Installations Électriques (RGIE) to guarantee the safety of occupants. Checking its conformity helps prevent breakdowns and short-circuits, and makes it easier to bring it up to standard in the event of sale or renovation.

1. Check presence of protective devices

A compliant electrical panel must include several essential elements:

Main circuit breaker: cuts off the power supply in the event of a problem.

Residual-current-operated switches (RCDs): These are required to detect current leaks and protect against electrocution. They must be type AC for conventional circuits and type A for household appliances (washing machines, hobs).

Divisional circuit breakers: Each circuit (sockets, lighting, household appliances, etc.) must be protected by an appropriate circuit breaker.

Lightning arrester: Recommended for protecting sensitive equipment against surges caused by lightning.

2. Check condition of wiring and connections

Faulty or badly organized wiring can lead to short-circuits and fire hazards. Make sure that :

Wires are securely fastened and insulated to prevent accidental contact.

The cable cross-section is adapted to the power of the circuits (sockets, lighting, heating, etc.).

Circuits are clearly identified to facilitate servicing and maintenance.

3. Check earthing

A compliant electrical panel must be properly earthed to discharge leakage currents and protect against electric shock. We recommend :

Check that the earth bar is properly connected to the panel.

Test grounding resistance with a suitable meter.

4. Respect safety distances

The electrical panel must be installed in a secure, accessible location that complies with RGIE regulations:

Installation height: between 1.20 m and 1.80 m from the ground.

Moisture protection: Do not install in bathrooms or damp areas.

Easy access: It must be easily accessible for rapid intervention in the event of a problem.

5. Have the installation checked by an approved body

If you have any doubts about the conformity of your electrical panel, an inspection by an approved organization (Vinçotte, BTV, OCB, SGS…) will provide you with a certificate of electrical conformity, which is mandatory in the event of sale or major renovation.

Why use Leader Services?

Our qualified electricians carry out a complete diagnosis of your electrical panel and ensure that it complies with current Belgian standards. We can update, replace or secure your installation.

Find out more about our services on our electricity page or contact us via our online form.

Why check the conformity of your electrical panel?
