All too often neglected, it plays an essential role in regulating pressure and protecting the appliance against the risk of overpressure. As experienced plumbers, we explain what this device is for, why its installation is compulsory and how to install it correctly.

What is the purpose of a safety group?

The safety group is attached to the water heater’s cold water inlet. It has three main functions:

Prevent overpressure in the water heater tank during heating (as hot water expands, pressure increases).

Built-in valve automatically vents excess pressure.

Allow the water heater to be drained in the event of maintenance or replacement.

Without a safety group, the pressure would rise dangerously, risking damage to the tank, piping or even, in extreme cases, an explosion.

When and why replace it?

A safety group should be replaced about every 5 years, or sooner if you notice :

Continuous leakage even during non-heating phases

Visible corrosion or unusual flow

Unable to turn the knob to drain

Abnormal popping or whistling

A faulty unit can lead to excessive water consumption, pressure loss, or even block the water heater completely.

Steps to install a safety group

Installing a safety group is a technical operation, but accessible to anyone with a basic knowledge of plumbing. Here are the main steps:

1. Cut off water and electricity

Before carrying out any work, turn off the cold water supply to the water heater and disconnect it from the mains.

2. Prepare fittings

Clean the water heater’s cold water inlet thread, then apply a gasket or thread with sealing paste or Teflon, depending on the type of fitting used.

3. Screw on safety group

Attach the safety group to the cold water inlet of the storage tank, usually located at the bottom of the appliance. Tighten firmly, without forcing, using an open-end wrench.

4. Connect to drain

The safety group must be connected to a drain or siphon to evacuate run-off during pressure build-up. Use a flexible hose or rigid pipe, and ensure a continuous slope.

5. Return to water and test

Turn on the water supply and allow the heater to fill. Check that there are no leaks from the fittings, then turn the power supply back on. The first time the heater heats up, you’ll probably see a normal drip from the safety group: this is a sign that it’s working properly.

Good practices to adopt

Test the safety group knob once a month to prevent it from jamming.

Never block the drain or connect the unit to a pressurized pipe.

Install a pressure reducer if inlet pressure exceeds 5 bar.

For very hard water, consider a softener or more frequent maintenance.

Why call in a professional?

Poor installation can lead to leaks, water damage, or worse, compromise the safety of your system. A professional plumber will :

Choose a model compatible with your water heater

Creating a compliant, durable installation

Advise you on protecting your network against overpressure and limescale

Respond quickly to leaks and breakdowns

Conclusion: a small device for great safety

Never underestimate the importance of the safety group. It’s a small component, but it plays a fundamental role in protecting your water heater and your home. Whether it’s a new installation or a replacement, it’s best to leave nothing to chance.

Need help installing or replacing a safety group?
