There are many possible causes, from a simple lack of pressure to a more complex problem in your heating system. It’s important to act quickly to identify the cause and resolve the problem effectively. Here are the main steps to follow when your radiators stop working.

Check boiler pressure

The first step is to check your boiler pressure. If the pressure is too low, the heating system may not work properly, and radiators may not heat at all. You can check the pressure on the boiler’s pressure gauge, which should generally be between 1 and 2 bar. If the pressure is too low, you may need to readjust it by adding water to the heating circuit. Consult your boiler manual to find out how.

Bleeding radiators

Air trapped in radiators can also be a frequent cause of malfunction. When air accumulates in the pipes, it prevents hot water from circulating properly. To solve this problem, you need to bleed your radiators. To do this, open the bleed screw with a special wrench or screwdriver. Allow the air to escape until you see a steady flow of water, then close the screw again. If you have several radiators in your home, be sure to bleed all of them.

Check thermostat

If the pressure is correct and your radiators are properly vented, but they still don’t heat up, your thermostat may be faulty. Check that the set temperature is sufficient to heat your radiators. If the thermostat appears to be faulty or not responding as it should, you may need to consider replacing it.

Check the boiler circulator

Another element to check is your boiler’s circulator. This component is responsible for the circulation of hot water in the heating circuit. If the circulator is faulty, the hot water won’t circulate properly through your radiators, which is why they stop heating. If you notice an abnormal noise or a malfunction in the circulator, we recommend that you contact a heating engineer to repair or replace it.

Check thermostatic valves

Radiator thermostatic valves may also be responsible for the lack of heat. Make sure the valves are open and not accidentally closed. If you have thermostatic valves, try adjusting them manually to check whether they are blocked or faulty.

When to call in a professional?

If, after checking all these steps, your radiators still don’t work, we strongly recommend that you call in a professional for an emergency intervention. A qualified heating engineer will be able to diagnose the problem and carry out the necessary repairs. You can contact an emergency heating engineer here.

If you need help with any other questions or require further information, please do not hesitate to contact us via our contact page.

When your radiators stop heating altogether, it can quickly become a major problem, especially in winter.
